definitely a contender for mommy of the year

we had a lovely lunch this afternoon with my friend kelsey, who had been dying to meet hannah. i took a few more precautions today than when we went to san francisco last month to visit my sister and my cousin.


that day, weather.com said it was supposed to be a lovely 74º so she wore a cute little top and shorts, and her backup outfit was a cute little onesie and pants. IDIOT i lived in san francisco long enough, i should know better. it was overcast and cool and i did my best to keep her warm. i forgot to pack socks, because it was supposed to be warm. and yet, i forgot to pack her sun hat as well, and she got pink on her nose and cheeks. (darn that san francisco glare!) (fyi: according to my lactation consultant, "they" say no sunscreen until 6 months NOT because of the chemicals, but because "they" don't want you to rely on sunscreen and take your baby into the sun without being covered up. POOH. we have since bought sunscreen and she gets slathered with it when we plan on being out at all.) so today we were prepared with sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses.

not much of a conversationalist

and then we got home, and she sat on my lap to have a nice eat because she had to endure the indignity of a bottle while we were at lunch, and after she ate she had a massive blowout. on my lap. all over my skirt. and then grinned at me, all proud of herself. i guess it must have felt good to get all that out of her system. did i mention that she got it all out of her system ONTO MY LAP?

i think brian should cook dinner tonight.

a clothes encounter

i'm packing up my maternity clothes today! i actually could have done it sooner, but i've been lazy. blame it on the kiddo. i've lost all but 8 pounds of the weight i put on while pregnant. yay!

i had to go get new jeans though, because my pre-baby jeans just did not fit and won't really unless i lose another 10-15 pounds after the baby weight is gone. i think i was just deluding myself before that they fit. while i was at old navy looking for jeans i found a very cute top that will be great for nursing. strangely, i cannot find it online.


those gathers at the neckline are elastic so it pulls down very easily without stretching out the knit, and i think the fit is pretty universally flattering. i got two, because they are such a nice lightweight jersey and i'm very into comfy soft tops lately.

i also stopped by target last week to pick up a couple more of these nursing camis which i absolutely love. i had gotten a couple nursing bras there as well but am not a huge fan of them. specifically this one. (is it wierd to be posting about my underwear online?) it's just not as comfortable as i thought it would be. any recommendations on a comfortable nursing bra? i have not tried the medela ones yet, mostly because they are so pricey ($38) but i will splurge if anyone thinks they are worth it.

- mommy necklaces, especially the sunset and earth collections.

- mama merit badges.

- reusable sandwich bags for kiddo snacks. obviously we're not there yet, but this little idea will get filed away for later.

- oh plah teething bracelet.

- mother's day chocolates in a sweet butterfly box. generally i am not a big chocolate person, but how cute is that box? and maybe it is just the hormones but those chocolates look pretty heavenly right now.

- these little silver claw-foot bathtubs that would be so perfect for my green birthday giveaway. the relaxing bath stuff... well, mine's way better. go enter!

i take back everything i ever said about maternity clothes

yes, those are maternity jeans and yes i love them. they are insanely comfortable. as much as i hated the idea of it, i absolutely love that tummy panel in my pants. much more so than low-rise pants that button under the belly.


doing my best with the lotion not to get stretch marks but i think i'm fighting a losing battle.

mama recommends: in praise of the bella band

how did i get pregnant without knowing about this wonderful piece of clothing? my sister, who has never been pregnant, turned me on to the bella band. how is it that i missed this?

can i tell you how much i love it? i can wear my nice trousers to work again! hallelujah! and it keeps my tummy warm, and since i am always cold, anything over my skin is a blessing. it also covers up that space between my thermal top and bottoms where my belly pokes out under my clothes. l.o.v.e. it.

because i can't go to work naked

i've been dreading maternity clothes lately, because i don't want to look like a tent. i know i am going to get huge and pregnant and my feet are going to swell and i will generally just be fat, but i don't want to look even more huge in maternity clothes. of course, the only real reason i have to have maternity clothes anyway is because i can't go to work naked or in brian's t-shirts, so i wanted them to at least look semi-cute.

enter alice, my closest girlfriend with style sensibility galore. we went to old navy yesterday (read: super-inexpensive and stylish!) and she helped me score a billion cute things for only $200. two pairs of work khakis, a sweater-jacket, five camisoles, five tees, two blouses, and a cute dress. the icing on the cake was the super-awesome teal ballet flats i picked up also. our ob/gyn recommended flats to begin with as pregnant women (not now, but later for sure) tend to be off-balance with their changing bodies, and alice pointed out that when my feet swell i will likely only be able to fit into flats. and cute shoes are a nice pick-me-up when one is feeling fat and yucky and hating one's clothes.

along the same lines, my burda maternity patterns arrived on saturday. burda had the best selection of cute maternity clothes and the patterns did not break the bank. (we're talking $22 for five patterns. awesome.) so i need to get started on a couple tops and dresses, a pair of black pants for work, and altering a pair of existing old jeans to supplement the old navy haul.
